Sainsbury’s and Morrisons emerge as World Cup winners

The supermarket battle for market share during the bumper World Cup trading period appears to have been won by Morrisons and Sainsbury's. According to Kantar Worldpanel data, these supermarkets both performed better than rivals Tesco and Asda in the 12 weeks to August 8th. Both Morrisons and Sainsbury's added 0.2% to their share of the grocery market, taking their respective tallies to 11.6% and 16.1%. Tesco saw its enormous market share slip back slightly from 31% to 30.8% while Asda's slice of the pie narrowed from 17.2% to 16.9%. In addition, the two largest supermarket operators experienced slower growth rates than the 4.5% advance seen by the wider market.

Edward Garner, spokesman for Kantar Worldpanel suggested that of all the major food retailers Morrisons had turned in the most impressive performance, saying: "Despite some commentators expecting the Morrisons growth to run out of steam, it still comfortably leads the top four in terms of year-on-year performance."
