M&S poach Inditex exec to head international expansion

It has been reported that Marks & Spencer is set to hire the highly-rated Inditex executive Jan Heere to head up a renewed programme of international expansion.

Mr Heere is understood to have considerable credibility and experience while in charge of Inditex's Russian business that analysts assess will be invaluable to the British retailer.

One of the key tenets of new chief executive Marc Bolland's strategy for M&S, as outlined back in November, is to transform the iconic retailer into a truly global business via expansion in fast-growing markets such as China and India. At that time Mr Bolland set out the company's target to lift internationals to between £800 million and £1 billion within the next four years while at the same time reducing M&S's dependency on the UK economic cycle.

Assuming the reports of Mr Heere's appointment prove to be accurate this would be the second key appointment in a month, following the recruitment of Laura Wade-Gery from Tesco to head up the M&S e-commerce division.
