Airline offsets passengers’ carbon footprints

Airline EL AL has said that it is the first international airline to automatically offset the carbon footprint of every UK passenger who books on-line, by planting a tree on their behalf.

Airline EL AL has teamed up with the charities KKL and JNF and is the first airline to automatically include it as part of the ticket price.

The agreement means that every passenger who books a return ticket London-Tel Aviv on-line through the EL AL website or the JNF website will have the carbon emissions from their fight offset through a tree planted by EL AL in Israel.

One passenger's return flight to Tel Aviv generates 0.64 tonnes of emissions and during its lifetime a tree can absorb approximately one tonne of CO2. To mark this contribution, each passenger will be sent an e-certificate, designed by JNF.

With over 110 years of experience, JNF and KKL have planted more than 240 million trees, transforming over 250,000 acres of arid land into forests. Because of JNF and KKL's forestry expertise and commitment to environmental protection, Israel is one of two countries to leave the 20th century with more trees than it had at the start.

Uri Danor, CEO UK and Northern Europe says: "EL AL is delighted that we can now combine a top quality service to our passengers, with protecting the environment. Each EL AL customer who books online can now fly in the knowledge that together, we are working towards clearer skies."

Samuel Hayek, Chairman, JNF UK says: "We are delighted to announce this exciting partnership with EL AL UK, JNF and KKL. For over a century, planting trees has been at the heart of JNF's work. This partnership represents a fantastic opportunity for people to help turn Israel green before they even arrive."
