The highly anticipated £400 million Victoria Square shopping centre has opened in Belfast. Outgoing First Minister Ian Paisley described the development as "a brand new chapter in the history of Belfast and Northern Ireland". The project consists of 98 retail units under a distinctive glass dome, including Northern Ireland’s first Hamleys and the largest House of Fraser store in the UK.
Victoria Square is the most expensive shopping centre ever built in Ireland and will increase the number of shops in the city centre by a third, turning Belfast into a major shopping destination. Retailers at the complex include All Saints, Coast, French Connection, Goldsmiths, Hobbs, La Senza, Monsoon, Regis, The Pier and Urban Outfitters.
The spectacular launch party featured the Ulster Orchestra, Tap Dogs and world famous aerial acrobats Boldo and Gema.
Hugh Black, centre manager, said: "Six years in development and 6,000 people involved in the construction, Victoria Square is a beacon for the regeneration of Belfast city centre and the continuing rebirth of Northern Ireland".
