Matalan mulls sale

05 October 2009 09:29

Owners of discount retailer Matalan are considering selling the business, according to reports, in a move which could see the chain valued at £1.5 billion.

The Sunday Times has reported that Matalan boss Alistair McGeorge has held several meetings with advisers, although talks are thought to be at an early stage. The news comes as Matalan prepares for a significant expansion drive, having invested £16 million in store refurbishments in the last financial year and a similar figure expected this year.

Founder John Hargreaves took the company private three years ago in an £827 million deal backed by £410 million of debt.
