Cardiff's St David's 2 shopping centre opened yesterday – the largest shopping centre to completed in Western Europe this year.
Despite the recession, 10,000 visitors turned out for the launch, which included many Welsh debuts such as handbag specialists Radley, beauty store Crabtree & Evelyn, jewellers Links of London, Fraser Hart and Beaverbrooks, clothing stores All Saints and Crew Clothing, accessories stores Essential and Ollie & Nic and Jamie Oliver's restaurant Jamie's Italian. Other names opening their first standalone Welsh stores included Hugo Boss, Kurt Geiger and Reiss.
The 967,500 sq ft centre is anchored by John Lewis' largest department store outside London which opened last month, generating 12,000 transactions in its first day.
Costing £675 million and taking three years to complete, the centre is now 70% let. It includes dozens of retail units as well as some 300 residential units.
