Next has become the 27th domestic sponsor of the 2012 London Olympics and will design Team GB's uniforms for the opening and closing ceremonies and supply home furnishings and linens for the athletes' village.

In addition, the retailer will supply formal uniforms for 4,500 technical officials and suits for the organising committee's reception staff. The total number to be dressed will exceed 5,000.

London 2012 commercial director Chris Townsend said: "I'm thrilled that another fantastic British brand has joined us on our journey to 2012.

"Next is a great brand and I'm confident Next will create a great look for the athletes, officials and staff as well as helping us to make London 2012 product available across the country. We welcome them aboard".

The partnership will begin with immediate effect.

Next Plc executive director Christos Angelides admitted the opportunity was too good to pass up.

He said:  "The London 2012 Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity. We are excited at the prospect of working with the British Olympic Association, the British Paralympic Association and Locog.

"We are all proud of the British athletes and look forward to helping in a small way to make them look great at the Olympic and Paralympic Ceremonies".

The retailer, which will also develop a London 2012 range to sell in its store, joins British Airways, Cadbury, Thomas Cook, Holiday Inn, John Lewis and Adidas.

In the 2008 Olympics, Lee Cooper designed Team GB's national dress, with the United States team dressed in Ralph Lauren and Ireland's team in John Rocha.
