Tesco to trial ‘drive-thru’ store

Tesco has announced that it is to trial Britain's first ever drive-thru store. The innovative notion plugs the gap for shoppers who haven't got time to conduct a weekly shop themselves or wait at home for a delivery. Instead, customers within the vicinity of the store in Baldock, Hertfordshire, will be able to order their goods online and pick them up without ever having to leave the car.
Customers book a two-hour collection slot and can pick up their shopping at any time within that period by producing their purchasing details at the Baldock store's specially reserved parking area. Store staff will then load up the goods into the car.
Laura Wade-Gery, chief executive of Tesco dotcom and Tesco Direct, said: "This will be especially popular with busy mums who have the school run and children's activities to manage.
"It also offers a solution to parents who want to avoid the challenge of shopping in a busy store with children in tow but can't afford the time to stay in for the shop to arrive to their door.
"We also expect it to help young professionals who want the convenience of a pre-picked and packed shop but who cannot commit to waiting at home for delivery."
If the drive-thru trial should prove to be successful, Tesco is likely to pursue a much broader roll-out.
