Supermarket chain Morrisons has lost market share for the first time in three years, according to consumer research group Kantar Worldpanel.
Morrisons' share fell from 12.1% to 12% in the 12 weeks to November 28th, its first decline since the end of 2007. The retailer also had the lowest sales growth of the big four supermarkets at 3%, behind the market at 4.3%.
Speaking to the Financial Times Clive Black, analyst at Shore Capital, said: "This particular score is cause for concern as we have been worried about the deteriorating trend in Morrisons' sales line for some months. It is now demonstrably underperforming its competitors in the sales line."
In contrast, Tesco increased its market share for the first time since May, up from 30.6% in November 2009 to 30.7% in the corresponding 12 week period this year.
Sainsbury's lifted its market share from 16.1% to 16.4%.
