Asos, the UK's biggest online retailer, is to fund the first National Apprenticeship in Fashion and Textiles teaming up with Fashion Enter which launched The Factory in August 2010, a large scale production company that manufactures around 5,000 garments for Asos a week.
Pioneering the initiative are Caren Downie, merchandising director at Asos, and Jenny Holloway of Fashion Enter, which provides employment and training for young aspiring fashion designers.
The lucky apprentices will work between Asos' headquarters in Regents Park and the Fashion Enter factory.
Sector Skills Council for Creative Media Skillset, will support the project. Speaking to Fashion United Skillset chief executive Dinah Caine said: "Our hope is that this apprenticeship will make our industries more accessible to young people from a diverse range of backgrounds."
