Primark is preparing for a major shift in its UK strategy

Primark is preparing for a major shift in its UK strategy, confirming plans to introduce home delivery for the first time. The move comes four years after the retailer cautiously entered e‑commerce with click‑and‑collect, and follows the purchase of a new warehouse in Sheffield to support nationwide fulfilment. Primark says home delivery represents a meaningful opportunity for profitable growth, especially after recent hot weather contributed to softer in‑store sales.

The decision marks a notable change in direction for a brand that long resisted online shopping, even through the pandemic. Analysts suggest the pivot reflects intensifying competition from ultra‑fast‑fashion players like Shein and Boohoo, as well as emerging platforms such as TikTok Shop and Vinted. Primark has already responded by lowering prices on hundreds of items and accelerating digital investment to keep pace with shifting customer expectations.

Associated British Foods, Primark’s parent company, expects UK sales to grow modestly in the fourth quarter, though like‑for‑like performance is forecast to remain flat. The company noted that autumn/winter ranges sold later than usual due to the warm summer, but trading improved once temperatures cooled. As Primark expands its online capabilities, ABF has also announced plans to spin off the fashion chain from its food business next year.

Retail analysts say the real test will be whether Primark can deliver home shipping profitably while maintaining the low prices that define its brand. With Shein and Vinted reshaping expectations around convenience and returns, Primark’s upcoming delivery service is as much about staying competitive as it is about unlocking new growth.
