Beginnings
National Museums Scotland has evolved from the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, founded in 1780, into one of the country’s leading cultural institutions. Built on over two centuries of scholarship, research, and stewardship, its nationally significant collections continue to preserve and share Scotland’s rich heritage.
A New Home
National Museums Scotland was formed in 1985 through the merger of two historic institutions and is now Scotland’s largest multidisciplinary museum organisation. Caring for more than 12 million objects and specimens, it combines world-class collections with expert conservation and research to preserve and share Scotland’s heritage with audiences worldwide.
