Growth in supermarket sales hit its lowest point in a decade in the last year, according to new figures.

Research firm Kantar Worldpanel said that Supermarket grocery sales grew by 0.8% in the 12 weeks to the end of August from a year earlier, a record low.

Competitors at both ends of the market, from discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl to high-end names such as Waitrose, have continued to eat into the market share of the “big four” grocers - Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons. However, they continue to dominate the sector, holding almost three quarters of the market between them.
