Asda, Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s are among 7oo other retailers are set to take part in ‘Purple Tuesday’, the first national day to highlight the needs of disabled shoppers.

Companies involved are required to make at least one long term commitment to better the experience for disabled customers.

Purple is a not-for-profit organisation that campaigns for companies to be more inclusive.  The ‘Purple Tuesday’ event was founded by the chief executive of Purple, Mike Adams.

Purple estimates that disabled people spend £249 billion a year shopping, but many feel that high street retail don’t cater to their needs, leaving them with no choice but to shop online.

Adams said he wants the event to “demonstrate to retailers that there are things that can be done at no cost” and to “start some momentum for businesses to see disabled people as, first and foremost, customers”.
