It has been reported that Belfast International Airport (BIA) are suing Air Lingus for £20 million for breaching their contract as they terminated a 10-year deal early.
In 2007, Aer Lingus started their contract with BIA, but in 2012, only five years later, they moved to George Best Belfast City Airport.
In a statement, a lawyer for BIA said: “The airline had entered "a binding commitment" to operate three aircraft from Aldergrove for 10 years” adding that this was based on letters exchanged in negotiations started in 2007.
Charges were fixed on numbers of passengers carried, "based on a ten-year agreement".
The court has heard that Air Lingus accepts there was a contractual relationship, but disputes the terms, whilst BIA have said they are caught “between a rock and a hard place” adding “Aer Lingus is trying to have its cake and eat it,” and that the airline were picking out parts of the agreement letter.
The case is reported to continue for a number of days.
