The grocery experts IGD have forecasted that hypermarket sales are set to fall over the next five years allowing Aldi and Lidl to double their sales.
IGD chief executive Joanne Denney-Finch told The Telegraph: “People are now more willing to shop around at different types of grocery formats. They have more options available to them than ever before. Shoppers now expect grocery retailing to organise itself around their lives rather than building their routines around store opening hours.”
The forecast has created a piling pressure on other supermarket groups as Tesco chief executive Philip Clark announced that the grocer was undergoing “radical” changes as it adapts to changed shopping behaviours.
