Amazon has launched a mobile card reader that will work in conjunction with a smartphone app to process and track all of a merchant’s business transactions.
The new product called the Amazon Local Register is a black, compact rectangular card reader stamped with Amazon’s logo across the front. The device will plug into smartphones and tablets and also offers lower processing fees.
The Amazon creation will compete directly with companies like Square and PayPal in the fast-growing payment transactions market.
Matt Swann, vice president of Amazon Local Commerce said: “From clothing stores to contractors, food trucks to accountants, businesses and organizations using Amazon Local Register will enjoy industry-leading low rates, trusted and secure payment processing and access to award-winning customer support. We understand that every penny and every minute counts, so we want to make accepting payments so easy and inexpensive that it no longer gets in the way of a business owner doing what they love - serving their customers and growing their business.”
