US cupcake chain Crumbs is to close its 65 stores across 12 states after the end of the cupcake trend brought sales to a standstill.

In a statement, the chain said that it was now evaluating "its limited” options.

Crumbs, which was founded in 2003, sold cupcakes in various flavours such as red velvet cheesecake, peanut butter and cookie dough and sizes ranging from one inch to six inches.

Crumbs reported a loss of $18.2m (£10.6 million) last year, a figure even greater than the previous year when the firm saw losses of $10.3m loss in 2012.
