Apple is urging owners of their Beats Pill XL to stop using it as it poses a fire risk.

The technology firm says any owners of this product should return the it because the battery can overheat. At least one person has been injured by a defective unit.

In North America alone, more than 230,000 units have been sold since they went on sale last year; the recall for the speakers is worldwide.

US Consumer Product Safety Commission has described in a statement that "Apple has received eight reports of incidents of the speakers overheating, including one with a burn to a consumer's finger and one with damage to a consumer's desk".

The speakers were priced at £269.95 on the official Apple website; Apple are offering store credit or an electronic payment of £215 in compensation to anyone who returns the item. However it will reimburse customers the full price they paid if they provide a receipt or other proof of purchase.

Apple will send a box to customers to return the product if they complete a form on the internet.

A year ago, Apple paid $3 billion (£2 billion) to buy the speaker's manufacturer, Beats Electronics and Beats Music.
