It has been reported that like-for-like sales at Asda fell 2.6% at the end of 2014 as German discounters Lidl and Aldi continued to put pressure on the UK’s larger supermarkets.

Andy Clarke, chief executive at Asda, commented: “The market remains in one of its most challenging and changeable periods in history."

Asda are certainly not alone when trying to maintain market share, with Tesco sales falling 2.4% in the six weeks to the beginning of January, Sainsbury’s sales fell 1.7% and Morrisons’ sales fell 3.1%.

Future developments for Asda will include the company spending £600 million on opening 17 new stores and 150 Click and Collect sites.
