A French judge has told a blogger that she must pay EU1,500 (£1,200) and change the title of a restaurant review because it was too prominent in Gooogle’s search results.

The unfavourable review of Il Giardino restaurant in the Aquitaine region of southwestern France was titled "the place to avoid in Cap-Ferret: Il Giardino".

The review came up in the top five Google results on searches for the restaurant and the owner said that it was “unfairly hurting” the business.

The judge decided that the blog's title should be changed, so that the phrase: "the place to avoid" was less prominent in the results.

Caroline Doudet, who wrote the review for her Cultur'elle blog, which has around 3,000 followers, told the BBC: “This decision creates a new crime of 'being too highly ranked (on a search engine)', or of having too great an influence. What is perverse, is that we look for bloggers who are influential, but only if they are nice about people.”
