Upmarket grocer Booths has said that retailers have a “responsibility” to their suppliers as the dairy pricing row continues. Booths is currently paying the highest price to dairy farmers in the grocery industry. All own label milk at Booths is traded as Fair Milk which guarantees the best market price to farmers.
Chris Dee, chief executive of the Preston-based grocer said: “We take the view that all businesses have a responsibility. It is important we find a way to make it economically sustainable [for suppliers]. There is no point squeezing our suppliers until they go bust. As a supermarket operator, our primary role is to serve customers. They want to trust us, and trust that we are dealing with our supply chain in the right way. There has to be some give and take on price. There are likely to be good times and bad times.”
