Cadbury and Marks & Spencer have failed to be included in an annual survey that ranks the top 20 consumer brands in the UK.

The research, carried out by The Centre for Brand Analysis, saw the two companies lose their places alongside online retailer Amazon, electronics firm Sony, baked beans firm Heinz, and oil giant Shell. Department store chain John Lewis, engineering firm Dyson, ice-cream firm Haagen-Dazs, Virgin Atlantic, washing up liquid Fairy and toy maker Lego replaced those brands which dropped off the list this year.

This was the first time since 2009 that M&S has been absent from the top 20 list. This follows a tough time for the retailer, which reported another fall in clothing sales in January.

Cadbury had suffered a recent backlash after it changed the recipe of its popular Creme Egg to use "standard, traditional Cadbury milk chocolate", not Dairy Milk for its shell.
