It has been reported that campaigners from the CPRE (The Campaign to Protect Rural England) will go to court to fight plans to expand runway capacity at either Heathrow or Gatwick.

The CPRE has said it's always had "serious concerns" about the commission's work and successfully took the last Heathrow expansion plans to court.

Ralph Smyth, the charity’s transport campaign manager said: "Reasonable alternatives have been ignored from the start. If the government decides to proceed we are bound to take legal advice as the first step to a challenge in the courts."

In response Patrick McLoughlin, transport secretary said that the commission had considered 52 proposals which “included examining whether additional capacity was required and how to make the most of our existing airports and runways." He added: "The Commission's final report this summer will mark the end of the most comprehensive and transparent process ever initiated by a British government on aviation."
