Waitrose reported a 3.1% rise in sales over the festive period, proving it was one of the winners in the key Christmas trading period, while Britain’s other biggest grocers have struggled.

The upmarket British food retailer, which is part of the employee-owned John Lewis Partnership, said on Wednesday that for the 5 week period ending December 24th underlying sales were 3.1% higher than last year.

Waitrose said its total sales were 5.4% higher at 736 million pounds, reflecting a strong growth of 33% in online grocery shopping sales.

Waitrose also said that sales of its premium ranges had soared, with growth of 46% in its Heston brand.
