A 5p charge on every plastic bag which could cut their use by at least three-quarters will come into effect next year.
The move will be outlined in the Queen’s speech today, which will also include information on the Government’s efforts to curb the use of zero hours contracts.
The move, which will apply to large shops and supermarkets, has been welcomed by campaigners and wildlife charities.
In England alone more than eight billion plastic bags are used each year, 130 per person.
