Consumer goods company Procter & Gamble (P&G) has been fined close to $1 million (£662,875) when Shanghai regulators decided the company contravened advertising laws by digitally enhancing imagery in its Crest toothpaste ads to whiten teeth.

The TV ad, which featured a famous Taiwanese talk show host, was taken off air in the middle of 2014 however the company states that all products did go through ample testing in China and followed the country’s laws. The fine is thought to be the biggest on record for such an offence.

Adverts by other foreign brands such as McDonald's, Apple and French retailer Carrefour have also been clamped down on by China’s authorities in the recent past.
