Scotland’s deputy first minister Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that Glasgow Prestwick Airport, famous as the only place in Britain where Elvis ever set foot, is to be nationalised in order to save jobs.

The airport was put up for sale in March 2012 by its current owner but as no buyer has been forthcoming, the Scottish Government has decided to buy it rather than see it close.

Ms Sturgeon said: “We want to secure the future of Prestwick Airport and the businesses that depend on it. We want to reassure staff that we will work with them to make the airport a success,” Ms Sturgeon said. I can therefore advise Parliament that the Scottish Government has advised the current owners of the airport our intention to commence a process towards acquisition of Prestwick Airport.”
