Brewery and pub group Greene King has raised its takeover offer for Spirit Pub Company to 109.5 pence per share, up from the original offer of 100 pence per share which Spirit’s board rejected last month.

Following the news, the board of Spirit said that it would recommend the deal to shareholders if other terms of the offer can be agreed.

Spirit added that “there can be no certainty that any firm offer will be made”.
