A survey that took place in October 2014 shows that there has been a 1.2% decline in food sales compared to October 2013. Overall there was a 2.7% decline in sales in the month. Mr McCorquodale, head of retail for KPMG said it was now up to shops to convince consumers to part with their cash in the lead-up to Christmas.

“Wet and wild at the start, the month ended with a hot Halloween — neither the best conditions for a positive consumer reaction to the promotions on offer.” Other departments such as games and home accessories were less effected as the weather doesn’t play such a big part.

Grocery sales for the UK in general have fallen for the first time since 1994. Supermarkets such as Asda, Sainbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco appear to be down on sales due to the impact of discounters such as Aldi and Lidl.

As the festive season approaches, and adverts now on our screens, retailers are hoping that season trading has begun.
