The head of HMV Digital has said that the company will make its digital offering a key part of its strategy as it launches a new app featuring sound and image recognition to source products for customers. The app will allow customers to preview tracks by scanning CD covers, posters or adverts.
The company currently has 141 stores in the UK, six months after it was rescued from administration by restructuring company Hilco who brought in James Coughlan to head HMV Digital in the UK, Ireland and Canada.
Mr Coughlan commented: “I think it could be a blessing in disguise that HMV's been out of the game for this long.
"There are so many services in the marketplace and there's certainly been lots of trial and error up until now that we can take key learnings from. It ensures we bring a service to market that will hit home with our consumers.
"They (Hilco) are hugely supportive and vocal about the fact that digital is certainly on our radar. They've put me in this position to take the reins like nobody has in the HMV business before now."
