US regulators have fined Japanese car giants Honda for a record $70 million (£46.4 million) for failing to report 1,729 deaths and injuries between July 2003 and June 2014.

The fines were issued on two separate occasions, one for failure to report deaths and injuries for $35 million and the other for the failure to reply to customer warranty claims also for $35 million.
In a statement, US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said "Honda and all of the automakers have a safety responsibility they must live up to - no excuses,"

Honda has also released a statement saying "We have resolved this matter and will move forward to build on the important actions Honda has already taken to address our past shortcomings in early warning reporting."
