The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is due to begin testing takeaway meals after it was found that nearly a third of dishes purporting to contain lamb were actually a different kind of meat.
Out of 145 samples tested, 25 contained only beef, whilst others contained chicken or turkey.
Local authorities are now being asked to test 300 samples of lamb from takeaways, starting at the beginning of May.
Takeaway owners are also being warned that they can be fined up to £5,000 for mislabeling food.
