Lego has said that it will not renew its “long term” contract with oil company Shell when it expires. The move comes after high profile protests from environmental group Greenpeace.
As part of the collaboration, Lego has sold brick sets of petrol stations and oil rigs with the Shell logo on them. Lego toys are also given out to customers at Shell’s petrol stations in over 30 countries. In a statement, Lego said that Greenpeace should have built a dialogue with Shell directly, rather than targeting the oil company through Lego.
President and chief executive Jorgen Vig Knudstorp said: “We firmly believe Greenpeace ought to have a direct conversation with Shell. We do not agree with the tactics used by Greenpeace that may have created misunderstandings among our stakeholders about the way we operate.”
