An 18-month study of over 4,000 bottles of wine has concluded that Lidl is the best supermarket in terms of value for money.
Researchers from the Wotwine app sampled wines from every UK supermarket (Asda, Aldi, the Co-op, Lidl, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose).
The study found that nearly two thirds of wine sold at Lidl represented “good value”, compared to its competitors. Aldi offered the next best value, with 64% of its wine representing a good value, followed by Asda.
Overall, the results suggest that nearly 60% of all wines in supermarkets are worth less than the price tag.
Lidl’s Ben Hulme told This is Money: ‘We've had a stellar year on wine, which has been the result of sourcing the very best quality wines and offering them at unbeatable prices. We know our customers appreciate fine wine and good value so we were determined to continue to deliver on both those points while expanding the variety available’.
