The cosmetics retailer Lush defied the Christmas slump after reporting sales of £20m in its 106 UK stores.

The brand, which sells handmade fragrances and soaps also saw its internet sales surge by 27.7% as customers shopped online this year for their Christmas gifts.

Kim Coles, Lush finance director, said: “Customers are increasingly appreciating our values and the value of high quality products made with the freshest possible natural ingredients.

"It’s great to be able to report such encouraging Christmas sales in the same week as filing our strong year-end results. We remain optimistic about the future as we continue to grow the business globally.”

Lush also announced its full-year numbers on Friday which showed that the group turnover for the year ending June 30 rose by 11.3% to £363m. However pre-tax profits fell 16.2% to £21.9m due to an increase in charitable donations and investment in sustainable initiatives which totalled to £3.1m.
