Maplin has announced it will be opening its first airport store in Glasgow next month after reporting a 5% increase in like-for-like sales over the Christmas period. This is a step up from the 2.5% growth experienced on average in the second half of 2013.

The store will feature three internet hubs, which will give customers the opportunity to browse Maplin’s full range and be able to access the click-and-collect service. Passengers returning to the airport will then be able to pick up orders or get them delivered to their homes.

John Cleland Maplin chief executive said:

“Since September we have been trading positive like-for-like and in December we doubled that run rate. We are one of the only high street stores where our stores are growing faster than online and I think that’s remarkable.”

Cleland also went on to say that sales rise was thanks to refreshing the entire store estate, reviewing the range and introducing Christmas products in to stores two weeks early in October.
