Irish fruit firm Fyffes and US company Chiquita will form the world’s largest banana company when they merge in a deal later this year.

ChiquitaFyffes, as the new company will be named, will be worth approximately $1 billion.

"This is a milestone transaction for Chiquita and Fyffes that brings together the best of both companies," said Chiquita boss Ed Lonergan.
