Airline Lufthansa has been forced to cancel 1,350 flights due to pilots preparing to go on strike as talks over retirement benefits collapsed.

The latest strike will be the ninth one since April and both short-haul and medium-haul flights will be affected, as well as long-haul flights being affected from Tuesday.

The retirement age for pilots is currently 55 and they receive up to 60% of their pay, however, the airline would like to get rid of the early retirement scheme which the pilots disapprove of.

The union said "despite all efforts for compromise proposals" by Lufthansa pilots during several rounds of negotiations since October, it had been unable to come to a satisfactory agreement with the company's management.
