Sainsbury's has released its Christmas advert, in partnership with the Royal British Legion and inspired by the real events of 100 years ago.

The supermarket upped the stakes in the battle for the best Christmas advert of 2014 by commemorating the extraordinary events of Christmas Day, 1914, when the two armies on the Western Front held an unofficial truce. Soldiers from both sides met in no-man's land, exchanged food, souvenirs and even played games of football together. The events are seen as a symbolic moment of peace and humanity amidst the horrors of the war.
