It has been announced today (27 August) that supermarket giant Sainsbury’s increased its pay by 4% for its staff which will take the hourly pay over the government’s new National Living Wage.

Currently, the hourly wage is £7.08 but will rise to £7.36 starting from the end of August, and will benefit 137,000 staff, including 40,000 staff who are under 25.

Chief executive of Sainsbury’s, Mike Coupe, said: "We're delighted to announce a four per cent pay increase for the colleagues who work in our stores. We know what a difference they make to our customers each and every day and we're totally committed to rewarding them well for the great service they provide."

Workers over 25 will receive a wage of £7.20 an hour from April 2016, which will increase to £9 an hour by 2020.

With the 4% increase offered to staff, Sainsbury’s said this was the largest rise given in more than 10 years.
