Manufacturing in the UK fell by 1.3% in May, the biggest decline since January 2013 and a surprise to analysts who had forecasted an increase of 0.4%.

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that David Tinsley, UK economist at BNP Paribas, described the results as a "heavy dose of reality" after a run of upbeat economic data and told the BBC that it may reflect some seasonal influences.
