The number of people unemployed in the UK rose by 10,000 between May and July, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics. The total rate of unemployment was 5.5%, which is flat on the previous quarter but down on last year’s figure of 6.2%.
In other news, UK wage growth hit a six-year high, rising by 2.9% for total pay including bonuses - the biggest increase since 2009. ONS statistician Nick Palmer said: "Although there has been a small rise in the unemployment level, employment is also up on the previous three months, with its headline rate returning to a record high. Meanwhile regular pay – not including bonuses – is growing at its fastest for over six years".
