US grocery chain Whole Foods has been accused of “overcharging” its customers by exaggerating weights of dairy and baked products as well as pre-packaged meat.

A statement made by Julie Menin, from New York’s Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) said it was "incredibly troubling”, adding: "As a large chain grocery store, Whole Foods has the money and resources to ensure greater accuracy and to correct what appears to be a widespread problem.”

In response Whole Foods said it rejected the DCA's "overreaching allegations" and added that customers were its number one priority.

Last year allegations were made that Whole Foods was being investigated regarding pricing irregularities in California. Whole Foods responded by improving pricing accuracy and agreed to pay $800,000 in penalties.

Whole Foods is widely known for its high prices, however they are planning to open smaller stores with lower prices.
