Sales of televisions, beer and replica football shirts will provide a boost for UK retailers as the World Cup countdown reaches its final stages.
Supermarkets and electrical retailers are expected to be amongst the winners as British consumers spend an estimated £814 million on World Cup related purchases, according to analysts at Conlumino.
Sainsbury's has said that it expects sales of beer and cider to be more than double those during a normal week while fans will snap up more than 280,000 England flags and more than 30,000 World Cup footballs from its stores.
Tesco, meanwhile, predicts that it will sell twice as much beer as normal while barbecue foods and snacks such as crisps and nuts will be up 25%.
Dave McCarthy, a retail analyst at HSBC, said: "The better England do, the more opportunities there are for supermarkets and the World Cup may provide some short-term relief." But he warned: "In the face of the structural issues they have got, like the rise of the discounters, it will prove insignificant."
