The staple of Northamptonshire's economy was once the manufacture of boots and shoes. Today, things have changed slightly. Now, many of the major footwear manufacturers in Northamptonshire have closed or relocated, allowing the other industries to flourish. Of interesting note is Northamptonshire's association with Motorsport Valley, seen as part of a global hub for the motor sport industry. Aside from motorsports, Northamptonshire is earmarked as part of the Milton Keynes and South Midlands Growth area, which identifies Northamptonshire as an area in which tens of thousands of new homes will be built by 2020.
